Understanding Myopia Management

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is an increasingly common vision condition that affects your child’s distance vision.

Children with myopia can see clearly up close, but not at a distance. For example, your child may be able to read a book with ease, but struggle to see the classroom whiteboard because it’s further away from their face.

Myopia can progress over time, which can cause your child’s vision to get worse as they get older.

High Myopia can put your child at risk of developing sight-threatening conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, cataracts, or glaucoma.

Myopia management is an innovative treatment designed to slow the progression of myopia in your child. This can protect your child’s vision as they grow up, helping them get the best view of their life!

Certified in the CooperVision MiSight Program

MiSight® 1 Day contact lenses are specifically designed to help slow the progression of myopia in children.

MiSight lenses work in two important ways:

  • Correcting your child’s vision so they can see clearly and comfortably at all distances.
  • Slowing the elongation of the eye, which is associated with worsening myopia over time.

Traditional single vision lenses have one prescription and are designed to correct central vision so your child can see clearly.  However, they do not address how light focuses in the peripheral retina. In some cases, this can create a signal that may contribute to continued eye growth and myopia progression.

MiSight 1 Day contact lenses use multiple treatment zones to both correct vision and create myopic defocus in the peripheral retina. This has been shown to help slow the elongation of the eye and reduce the progression of myopia. Dr. McCulley is certified through the CooperVision MiSight Program, making McCulley Optix Gallery one of the first practices in the area to offer this innovative treatment for young patients. Schedule a consultation with us today to see if MiSight is right for your child.
